SPARTANBURG, S.C., November 4, 2017 – In comeback fashion, the No. 20 Monroe College women's volleyball team claimed a four-set victory at Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday, earning the Mustangs the 2017 NJCAA District P Crown and sending the Mustangs to the National Tournament. The Mustangs also improve to 20-9 on the year with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 20-10.
The Mustangs fell behind after Spartanburg took a 25-18 win in the opening frame. The Mustangs fired back with a 25-13 win to knot things up at 1-1. Monroe then claimed the third frame, 25-18, to take control of the match. The Mustangs closed things out with their strongest showing of the afternoon, finishing with a 25-11 victory for the 3-1 win and the District Title.
Kyra Kaloi led the Mustangs with 13 kills and hit .375 on the afternoon.
Keyshla Laureano Perez had eight kills and a pair of blocks, while
Marissa Hackett threw down seven kills with another two blocks.
Alexis Baer dished out 33 assists, while
Nashally Eleutiza picked up a team-high 11 digs. Christina Robles and Kaloi matched with three service aces, while Robles added 10 digs.
The Mustangs will now head to the NJCAA Div. I National Tournament, which begins on Nov. 16 in Hutchinson, Kan. Their first-round opponent will be determined at a later date.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
