No. 10 Monroe Women’s Soccer Defeats CCBC-Essex with Strong Offensive Effort

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 1, 2017 – The No. 10 Monroe College women's soccer team bounced back from Friday evening's defeat with a strong showing on Sunday, defeating CCBC-Essex by a score of 5-2 at City Park. The Mustangs improve to 4-3 on the season with the win, while the Knights drop to 7-2-1.
 
The Mustangs got things going quickly when Angie Ponce scored back-to-back goals in the seventh and eighth minutes, both off assists from Juliana Pires. Monroe then caught a lucky break the Knights accidentally put one in their own net for an own goal, making it a 3-0 game at the 11:31 mark. Yolanda Albalat then got in on the action, scoring off a feed from Ponce in the 15th minute. Ponce set up Albalat for another goal in the 21st minute to push the lead to 5-0. The Knights got back in it when Erin Moran scored back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other to make it a 5-2 game, and that score stuck through the halftime buzzer.
 
Ponce finished with six points on two goals and two assists in the game. Albalat had a pair of goals as well, scoring on Ponce's two assists.
 
Monroe hits the road on Monday, Oct. 2, to take on Union County College in Cranford, N.J. The game is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
