Fort Myers, Fla. - The Monroe College Women's Basketball team went 1-1 on a Florida road trip last week, defeating Eastern Florida State College, 70-64, but falling to Florida SouthWestern State College, 76-60. The team is now 12-5 on the season.
The Mustangs lost their Thursday game against Florida SouthWestern, 76-60.
Shania Johnson paced the team with 21 points and 7 steals. The Mustangs trailed in the game from the outset, but outscored the Buccaneers in the fourth quarter, 22-12.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start against Eastern Florida on Friday, leading 39-31 at the half. They held the Titans to eight points in the second quarter. The advantage grew as large as ten points when Johnson made a three-pointer at the 5:22 mark in the second quarter. Eastern Florida fought back in the fourth, getting as close as four points with just under two minutes remaining.
Jada Banks sealed the game with a late basket for Monroe. Monroe won, 70-64.
In the win, Johnson had a double-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Cristina Soriano also posted a double-double of 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Lisana Burnett scored ten points.
The Monroe College Women's basketball team will return to action on Saturday, January 7
th, hosting Monroe Community College at 1:00 PM. The Mustangs also hosted Monroe Community College earlier in the season, beating them by a single point on November 20
th.
