Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. – The Monroe College baseball team closed out its regular season on Tuesday with a 15-8 victory at Sullivan Community College. The Mustangs scored 12 runs in the first inning, leading the way for a seven-run triumph.
Monroe got 11 hits in the first inning en route to the 12 runs.
Alex De La Cruz led off with a single. He stole second and scored on an
Isaiah Torres RBI double. Two batters later,
Lewis Gonzalez ripped a two-RBI double that scored Torres and
Cam Crabbe, who had reached on an error. Up 3-0,
Ronald Jackson singled to put runners on the corner, and
C.J. Moore made the score 4-0 with an RBI base hit to center.
John Russo followed with another base hit that plated Jackson and moved Moore to second.
From there, Moore stole third. Up 5-0 and with runners on the corners,
Ramger Iglesias lifted a sacrifice fly to center that easily brought in Moore and made the score 6-0. De La Cruz's second at-bat of the inning produced an RBI triple that scored Russo.
Endy Villalona brought in De La Cruz on a single. Torres then blasted a homer to center, pushing the lead to 10-0. After a Crabbe walk, Gonzalez connected on a 420-foot long ball over the wall in left-center to make the score 12-0.
Monroe got a run in the fourth on a squeeze bunt from Iglesias. They added another in the fifth on a Crabbe sacrifice fly and notched number 15 in the ninth on a Gonzalez double.
The Mustangs used ten pitchers in the game as a tune-up for the upcoming Region XV Championship.
Francis Ortiz picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the season. Gonzalez and Torres each finished with three hits and a homer. Gonzalez drove in five, while Torres plated three.
The Monroe College baseball team is the #1 seed in the upcoming Region XV Championship tournament, which will begin on Saturday, May 14 at 1:00 PM, when ASA faces Globe. The Mustangs will face the winner of that contest at 4:00 PM.
