New Rochelle, N.Y.– The Monroe College softball team split a doubleheader with Rowan College at Burlington County this weekend. They dropped the opener 9-8, but won the second game 6-1. The Mustangs took three of four games against Burlington in this season.
Burlington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, thanks to a pair of runs in the second. The Mustangs took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the third.
Taylor White reached on an error.
Leidaly Garcia followed with a single, and they both scored on a two-RBI double from
Cassidy Wootten.
Gabrielle Placencia brought in the third run with a grounder that was misplayed for an error.
The Barons struck back in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times and grabbing a 5-3 lead. Monroe scored twice in the fifth to tie the game. White and Garcia started the rally once again, reaching on a walk and a single. Later in the inning,
Yalitza Rodriguez lifted a fly ball to center that was misplayed for an error. White and Garcia scored on the play, evening the score at 5-5.
Burlington responded once again with three runs to regain the lead at 8-5, but Monroe tied the game again with three runs in their half of the sixth. With two outs,
Yeisy Cruz singled through the left side. White followed with a base hit of her own. Garcia collected the third straight hit and scored Cruz to make the score 8-6. Wootten singled in the infield to load the bases. Placencia then tied the game at 8-8 with a two-RBI single to center that scored White and Garcia.
The Mustangs got a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh, but failed to score. Burlington got a walk off run in the bottom of the inning to win 9-8.
Monroe took control of game two with four runs in the first. Wootten drove in the first run with an RBI single.
Maranda Diaz followed with a two-RBI triple that put the Mustangs ahead 3-0. Rodriguez connected on a double that scored Diaz and made the score 4-0.
The Mustangs added two more in the seventh on an RBI triple from Wootten and a run-scoring double by Rodriguez. Monroe won 6-1.
In the game, Rodriguez led the Mustangs with three hits. Wootten, Diaz and Garcia each collected two hits.
Tara Sasso threw her strongest game of the season. She earned a complete game, allowing just one hit. She walked two and struck out seven.
The Monroe College softball team will close out its regular season on Tuesday, April 26, when they travel to New Jersey for a doubleheader against Brookdale Community College. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM.
