McHenry, Md. – The Monroe College baseball team earned a doubleheader split at Garrett College, losing the opener 4-3, but rebounding with a 14-1 win in the second game. The team is now 24-13 for the season.
Garrett scored two runs in the first inning to jump out on top early in game one. Monroe got on the board with one in the fourth and then grabbed a 3-2 lead with two more in the fifth. In the fourth, doubles from
Cam Crabbe and
John Russo accounted for the lone run. An inning later, a pair of hits from
Ramger Iglesias and
Alex De La Cruz and RBI outs from
Endy Villalona and
Isaiah Torres earned two more.
Garrett responded with two runs in the sixth inning, winning the opener, 4-3.
Osvaldo Duran threw a complete game and took the loss. He is now 2-3 for the season, despite a 2.84 ERA. He struck out five, with no walks. Crabbe and Russo each clocked a pair of hits for the Mustangs.
Game two went to Monroe, 14-1, and lasted just five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Andres Fernandez improved to 5-2 with the win and lowered his ERA to 2.20.
Fernando Figueroa tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
The game was decided in the top of the first inning as the Mustangs scored 10 times in their half; they slugged seven of their 13 hits then as well. Iglesias reached on a walk and De La Cruz followed with a single. From there, Villalona connected on his second homerun of the season. Three RBIs gave him a team-high 42 for the season. Crabbe made back-to-back homers, leading the team with seven for the season.
The Mustangs continued to dominate as Torres and
Lewis Gonzalez were hit by pitches.
Michael Ramirez then hit an RBI single that plated Torres and pushed Gonzalez to third. From there, Ramirez took second.
Ronald Jackson made the score 7-0 courtesy of a two-RBI single that drove in Gonzalez and Ramirez. After Iglesias was hit by a pitch, De La Cruz connected on the third homer of the inning, making the score 10-0 for Monroe.
The Mustangs finished their scoring with four more runs in the third inning. Already up 10-0, Iglesias made it 11-0 on a triple and a wild pitch. De La Cruz and Villalona walked and Crabbe drove them both in with a triple. Crabbe had seven total bases in two at-bats so far. Russo made the score 14-0 with a base hit to center that plated Crabbe. Garrett scored in the fourth and Monroe walked away with a 14-1 win and a split of the doubleheader.
The Mustangs are 3-4 on their current 14-game road trip. The away games continue on Saturday, April 23, with a doubleheader at Potomac State College of West Virginia University in Keyser, WV. The first pitch is slated for noon.
