New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College men's basketball team enacted some revenge on Frederick Community College on Monday with a convincing, 74-55 win. The victory countered a 73-70 setback the Mustangs took earlier in the year against the Cougars.
Both teams got off to a slow start as Frederick took an 11-10 lead through the first five-and-a-half minutes of play. From there, Monroe used a 14-0 run to grab control of the game and take a 24-11 lead.
Ran Tut accounted for six points in the outburst.
Jarron Chapman totaled four,
Will Tavares made a bucket, and
Lawahn Lewis and
Marcellas Anderson each added a free throw. A Tut foul shot in the final minute gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the half, 23 points. Monroe led at the break, 41-19.
The outcome was never in question in the second half as the Cougars got no closer than 14 points. The largest lead of the game, 26 points, came when a Lewis foul shot made the score 57-31 with 12:27 left. The Mustangs went on to win 74-55.
In the victory, Tut led all scorers with 21 points on 7-10 shooting.
Hampus Ahlin finished with 14 points and made 4-of-7 three-pointers. The Monroe College men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, February 11, when they host ASA in New Rochelle. The start time for the game is 7:00 PM.
