New Rochelle, N.Y. – It was a dominating performance for the Monroe College junior varsity basketball team on Sunday, as they defeated Bronx foe, Mount St. Vincent, 97-70. Three Mustangs reached double-figures in scoring in the win.
Chianta Holtclaw opened the scoring in the game and his bucket keyed a 13-3 run early on in the first half. The Dolphins fought back and got the deficit to as close as two points, but Monroe pulled away late in the half to lead 50-35 at the break.
The second half saw the lead grow to 32 points when
Merault Almonor grabbed a rebound, started a fast break and dished to
Lamontrell Rice for an easy layup. The team went on to win, 97-70.
The 97 point total scored by Monroe represented their second-highest output of the season, surpassed only by the 98 points they had in a win over Post University earlier in the season.
In the victory, Rice had a season-best 27 points on 11-16 shooting.
Jason Barrera added 16 points and a team-best four steals. Azmi Abu-Ahmad totaled 16 as well.
The Monroe College junior varsity basketball team returns to action on Thursday, February 11 when they travel to West Point, New York to face Army Prep. The start time is 6:30 PM.
