Last Second Three-Pointer Falls Short as Monroe Women’s Basketball Loses to Lackawanna 67-65

New Rochelle, N.Y. – A last-gasp three-pointer from Camilla Kilinc clinked off the rim and fell away in the closing seconds as the Monroe College women's basketball team fell to Lackawanna, 67-65, in a game played at the Monroe Athletic Complex.  In what closely resembled the world of misfit toys, the Mustangs played the final few minutes with just four, and then three players.

Despite having just five healthy bodies due to injuries, Monroe led 17-4 after the first quarter.  The Mustangs took a 6-0 lead on baskets from Fatoumata Coulibaly, Camilla Kilinc and Gabrielle Jubinville.  After a Falcons bucket made it 6-2, an 8-0, Monroe run pushed the advantage to 14-2.  Coulibaly scored six of the points in the run and Desitni Green added a bucket.

The second quarter opened with a Jubinville layup that gave Monroe its biggest lead of the contest, 15 points.  From there, Lackawanna slowly chipped away, closing the gap to eight points at the half, 34-26.

The third quarter saw the Mustangs take control once again.  They got the cushion back into double digits, eventually getting to 13 points when Green got a steal and found Kilinc who finished with a bucket.  Monroe led after three, 49-41.

The final ten minutes were surreal for Monroe.  They built the lead back to 13 points, but Coulibaly fouled out with 4:56 remaining.  Playing 4-on-5, the Mustangs slowed the pace and played the clock and held the lead until the 1:01 mark, when Jubinville was charged with her fifth foul.  Monroe played the remainder of the game with three players – Green, Kilinc and Norwood.  They held the lead until a Falcons layup with 0:07 left put them up, 67-65.  On the ensuing inbounds, Kilinc ended up with an open look from the top of the key, but her three-pointer rattled around and fell out and Lackawanna escaped with the win.

The team closes out its home schedule on Sunday, February 14, when they host Dean College at 2PM.  The three sophomores will be honored prior to the game.
