New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Volleyball team is headed to the National Tournament after defeating Spartanburg Methodist College in three sets in Saturday night's District Championship match. The set scores were 25-19, 25-21, and 25-15 for Monroe.
Monroe jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set, thanks to kills from
Brianna Chin,
Marissa Hackett,
Cristen Coryatt, and
Kathrin Pasel. The Mustangs closed out the set with a 4-1 run, largely due to
Anyela Aquino's strong serving, which brought the score to 25-19.
The Mustangs fell behind early in the second set, until
Carla Soufront set up Chin for a kill that tied the score at 4-4. Trailing 8-6 later in the set, Monroe used a 6-0 run to gain a 12-8 lead. The points came from a Coryatt kill, blocks from
Karen Souza and
Brianna Chin, a kill from Pasel, and a Spartanburg error. The Mustangs closed out the set, 25-21, on a Chin service ace.
Alexis Booker gave Monroe a boost in the third set. The sophomore recorded four kills in the set, and the Mustangs closed out the Pioneers, 25-15. Coryatt led the team with 15 kills.
Neysha Gonzalez had 16 digs, while
Carla Soufront added 26 assists.
The team is now 21-11 on the season and ranked #18 in the nation by the NJCAA. The National Championship Tournament be held November 17th-19th at the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyoming.
