Monroe College Men’s Soccer Earns Region XV Title with 2-0 Shutout of ASA

Luiz Soupinski Accounts for Both Mustangs Markers

New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College Men's Soccer team prevailed over ASA College, 2-0, on Saturday, capturing the Region XV championship. When the two teams played a match two weeks ago, Monroe beat ASA, 1-0, in a close-fought, evenly matched contest.  Saturday's encore was similar, with both sides controlling play at different points in the game. Freshman midfielder Luiz Soupinski accounted for both Monroe markers.

ASA landed the first scoring chance just six minutes into the contest.  After a Monroe foul, ASA put a ball in the box and flicked a shot towards the net.  Monroe keeper Svyat Kozak was able to block the shot.

The Mustangs took control from there, gaining a couple of decent scoring chances. Soupinski had a scoring chance in the 16th minute that the ASA keeper parried.  Less than ten minutes after that, Evan Finnegan put a ball in the box that Ignacio Goya headed just wide of the goal. The game remained scoreless at the half.

Monroe got on the board just past the hour mark.  In transition, the Mustangs had numbers. The ball was played to the middle of the box for Goya.  He quickly flicked the ball to his right and found Soupinski, who put a shot past the outstretched arms of the keeper.  Finally, with less than ten minutes remaining, Soupinski sealed the deal with a breakaway marker, bringing the score to 2-0.

The defense, led by Osman Fofanah, Pablo Pertusa, and Felipe Mendes, limited the Avengers to just two shots in the win. The team improved to 14-0 on the season.

The Monroe College Men's Soccer team will host the District Championship next weekend against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
