New Rochelle, N.Y . – The Monroe College women's basketball team opened the Monroe Invitational with an 18-point win over Jamestown Community College, 61-44, in a game played in New Rochelle on Saturday. The team improved to 5-13 with the victory.
Things got off to an inauspicious start for the Monroe College women's basketball team on Saturday as the Jayhawks jumped off to an early lead in the game. A
Gabrielle Jubinville bucket off a feed from
Destini Green tied the score at 7-all and put Monroe in the driver's seat for the rest of the day. A Green steal at layup with 6:28 left put the Mustangs ahead, 9-7.
The lead reached double-digits when a Jubinville three-point play put Monroe up ten, 19-9. This came off the heels of an 11-0 run turned a 9-7 deficit into an 18-9 lead. The lead got to 13 points when Dennis beat the buzzer with a jumper.
A
Breanna Dennis layup with 0:32 left in the second quarter put Monroe ahead, 34-17, making the 17-point gap the largest first-half lead with the Mustangs. The team led by that score at the intermission.
Jamestown dominated the third quarter and cut the deficit to 11 points late in the quarter on a basket with 0:32 remaining. Monroe responded with a Jubinville jumped in the closing seconds to lead by 13 points after three quarters of play.
The Mustangs got the lead as much as 21 points when
Camilla Kilinc nailed a jumper with 2:24 to make the score 61-40. The final score in the game was 61-44.
Dennis finished with 19 points, seven points and six steals. Jubinville posted a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Monroe College women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, January 17, when they host Gateway C.C., whom fell to ASA in the other game of the Monroe Invitational on Saturday. The tipoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
