La Plata, Md. - The Monroe College women's soccer team showed why they were ranked 8
th in the most recent NSCAA Coaches Poll by defeating Southern Maryland 11-0 over the weekend in a game played in La Plata, Maryland. The offensive onslaught featured 23 shots and six different goal scorers for the Mustangs.
The game was scoreless until the 24:42 mark when a foul in the box against Southern led to a penalty kick.
Aline Delima calmly drained the kick to put Monroe up, 1-0. The offensive juggernaut continued from there and the Mustangs doubled the score five minutes later.
Bruna Tavarez found
Ana Hess who buried the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0, Monroe. A third goal in the half came at 35:21 hen Tavarez picked up her second assist. She played the ball to
Sabrina Cardona who scored and Monroe led 3-0 at the break.
The result was never in jeopardy, but the Mustangs broke the game open in the second half by scoring eight times. In the 60
th minute, Tavarez got on the front end of one this time when she finished off a pass from
Brianna McGrath to make it 4-0. Shortly thereadter, Delima found
Kaitlyn Shea for the goal that made it 5-0.
Ana Hess used a Delima pass to make the score 6-0 in the 70
th minute. Delima scored 0:40 later to make it 7-0, Monroe. Substitute
Maia Williams scored a hat trick in a 6:50 span of game time in the second half and Cardona scored off a Williams feed and Monroe had the 11-0 victory.
Williams finished with three goals and an assist. Delima and Hess tallied a pair of goals and two assists. Cardona scored twice and earned a helper. Tavarez scored and dished out two assists, while Shea scored a goal. The stalwart play of the defense blanked Southern Maryland on shots which allowed
Tiffany Martinez to pick up the clean sheet in goal.
The Monroe College women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, September 22, when they host Ocean County College. The kickoff from City Park is slated for 6:00 PM.
