Selden, N.Y. – The Monroe College volleyball team continued its torrid start by improving to 17-0 with a three set win over Suffolk Community College in Selden, New York, on Thursday. The scores of the sets were 25-18, 25-3 and 25-8.
Set one was the most competitive of the three, with Suffolk taking an early 3-1 lead. A
Neysha Gonzalez service ace put the Mustangs ahead, 4-3. Monroe never relinquished the lead in the set after that and eventually built a ten point cushion, 24-14, when
Gabriella Nobrega set up
Karen Souza for a kill. The final point of the set was a kill from
Cristen Coryatt that was set up by Nobrega.
Monroe dominated the second set, taking it 25-3. The two sides split the first four points of the set, evening the score at 2-2. From there, the Mustangs closed out the set with a 23-1 run. Already up 6-3, Monroe scored the next 19 points to take the set.
Barbara Maximiano had four kills in the set. Souza,
Taylor Robinson and
Chloe Aloizos had kills. The final point in the set came courtesy of a Nobrega ace.
Set three went to Monroe 25-8. The Mustangs took a 5-1 lead on kills from
Alexis Booker and
Jourdan Hodge and a couple of Suffolk errors. The team never looked back from there. The final point came when a
Jazmine Ortiz serve was misplayed.
The Mustangs improved to 17-0 with the win. The team returns to action on Thursday, September 17, when they host Queensboro in the home openers. The first serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
