The Monroe Mustangs women's basketball team put on their racing shoes and literally and figuratively ran the Burlington Barons out of the Monroe Athletic Complex. Putting on a fast break, pressing style that harkened back to the great Monroe teams of the past, the Mustangs overwhelmed the 11-6 Barons, 99-58.
"We needed this one against a District rival with a good record," said Coach James Robinson, Jr. "This is an important stretch for us and we want to start establishing the kinds of things we are going to need to do to beat the better teams as the season goes on. We had lots of cogs working well tonight."
iMonroe had three players with double firgues in scoring. Sophomore
Breana Bey was at the top of the heap with 17 points. Freshman
Shania Johnson had 16 points and sophomore
Aaliyah Mercer had 14. Both Mercer and Johnson had seven assists in a game where the Mustangs featured numerous fast breaks. All those layups led to 65.79% shooting in the first half. Overall Monroe had 64 of their 99 ppoints in the paint.
Freshman
Linda Ulasi had 11 rebounds.
Monroe is now 15-6 on the season. They've won their last four games. This was the first of four consecutive home games. They'll play Union at the MAC Thursday night and will host Hagerstown and Mercyhurst over the weekend.
