Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | by Gary Axelbank

Monroe upends ASA, 2-0

Mustangs take a one-game conference lead

With only two teams in NJCAA Region XV (Division I) a large part of the season's prospects are on the line when the Monroe Mustangs women's soccer team faces ASA in one of their two regular season games.  Saturday night on Randall's Island field #70, Monroe got a hard-fought 2-0 win over the Avengers and as a result, the #8-ranked Mustangs are now 7-1 and a game ahead in the conference.

"It was well earned," Coach Jonathan Garbar told his players after the game,  "but it was certainly not our best game.  While we know that it wasn't the highest level we can play, there are some things we should be proud of.  We still found a way to push ourselves to get the right result."

Monroe had a number of chances as they buzzed around the ASA goal for much of the first half but couldn't capitalize.  Finally in the thirty-second minute freshman Kathellen Sousa put one in off a rebound to give Monroe a lead.

That lasted until there were two-minutes left in the game and freshman Nicole Rivera put home a feed from freshman Gabriela Maidana and Monroe had an insurmountable two-goal lead.

"I liked the fact that everyone was unified and we played well with each other," Maidana told her teammates after the game.

The next time Monroe will play ASA will be on Friday October 24 at 12:00pm on their home field at City Park in New Rocelle.  A win or tie will earn the Region title for the Mustangs.  The game will be part of the college's 2014 Homecoming festivities.

"We have a lot of work to do," Coach Garbar said, "and we are excited about doing that work so that tomorrow we can play even better."

Up next for Monroe are four straight road games.
