The #3-ranked Monroe Mustangs women's soccer team took their show on the 'Rhode' and came away with a shutout of CCRI on Rhode Island this past Saturday. The victory gives Monroe a 10-1 record as they approach the most significant moments of their regular season.
"You could feel us coming together," said Coach
Jonathan Garbar. "I'm proud of how hard we work and when our student athletes see the benefit of that work right in front of their eyes, it's very special to watch. We played well this weekend."
Of the five goals there were three different goal scorers. Sophomore captain
Melanie Formosa, who has displayed a vital brand of consistency and leadership all season long, got Monroe going soon after the opening kickoff, scoring off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Samantha Mendez in the second minute.
Brazilian freshman striker
Gabriela Maidana had two unassisted first half goals, in the 12
th and 22
nd minutes.
In the second half sophomore
Gemma Craine scored off a penalty kick in the 63
rd minute and sophomore backfielder
Lina Dominguez finished off Monroe's scoring with an 83
rd minute goal.
Monroe will play at Essex on Wednesday and then come home for a Saturday 1:00pm match against Harford. Their biggest moment of the season will come on Friday of Monroe's Homecoming Week (October 24) as they will play Region rival ASA at 1:00pm. If Monroe wins or ties they'll take their third straight Region Championship.
