New Rochelle, NY – Sophomore Nkanyezi Ziqubu of the Monroe men's cross country team and sophomore Emma Dedushaj of the Monroe women's volleyball team have been named this week's Mustangs of the Week.
 
Ziqubu kicked off his sophomore campaign in a big way, taking home the top spot in the 8k race at the Queensborough Invite on Sunday. After a solid freshman season, the South Africa native ran a 27:04.30 to not only win the event, but secure a region title for the Mustangs.
 
Coming off a successful cross country season in 2024, Ziqubu looks to lead the Mustangs to another promising season.
 
Dedushaj continued to thrive as Monroe's libero this week, boosting the team to a 5-0 week with her tremendous defense. Through the five straight set victories, the New Haven transfer accumulated 103 digs, bringing her season total to 551.
 
With 551 digs, Dedushaj now ranks in the top-five among the program's single-season digs leaderboard. She need 219 more digs over the course of the remainder of the season to take the top spot in Monroe history.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
