Kettia Ambrose Breaks School Record In 400m; Women's Outdoor Track And Field Competes In Princeton

Princeton, NJ – Sophomore Kettia Ambrose of the Monroe University women's outdoor track and field team broke the school record in the 400m at the Sam Howell Distance Invite on Friday.

Ambrose clocked in at 55.09 in the event, surpassing the previous record set by Chinenye Onourah in 2022 when she ran the 400m with a time of 55.22. The historic time set by Ambrose clears the qualification standards for nationals as she punches her ticket to Hutchinson.

The speedy sophomore, who also ran a 12.78 100m moments after breaking the school record, set the pace for the team as Monroe saw two additional national qualifiers at the second meet of the season.

Freshman Kaliyah Jones joined Ambrose in the 400m, qualifying for nationals with a time of 55.78. Her time earned second place overall in the event (only behind Ambrose) and secured a spot at nationals with her personal best performance.

Sophomore Julihanna Johnson and freshman Jazmiene Ferguson also ran the 400m, clocking in at 1:05.76 and 1:06.54, respectively.

Sophomore Attoya Harvey joined Ambrose and Jones with national qualifications, earning a spot at Hutchinson with a 4:48.33 1500m time. Freshmen Tanesia Gardiner and Nthabiseng Komane participated in the 1500m as well, clocking in at 5:12.13 and 5:46.77, respectively.

The Mustangs will head to Durham, NC, for their next competition. The Duke Invitational awaits on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, as Monroe looks to send more athletes to nationals.
