Bel Air, MD – The Monroe University softball team swept its Saturday doubleheader at Harford Community College in dramatic fashion to punch its ticket to the Region 10 Tournament. The Mustangs took game one, 3-1, before concluding the best-of-three series with a 3-2 win.
Up 3-2 with one out in the seventh, the Fighting Owls had the tying run on third. Enter sophomore
Maricela Colon, who caught the second out of the inning before firing a rope to home plate, ending the game and catapulting the Mustangs to the Region 10 Tournament.
The play by Colon capped off a phenomenal day for the Mustangs as they left no doubt.
It started in game one as sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain came up in the clutch. Down 1-0 in the sixth, Mongrain singled in the tying run. Then in the seventh, with the bases-loaded, Mongrain did it again as she doubled in two runs to put Monroe up for good.
Freshman
Georgia Wilson earned the win with a complete game five-hitter. Additionally, sophomore
Gabrielle Gonzalez not only eclipsed 100 career hits, but also broke the single season stolen base record with her 48th of the season, passing Mya Jack's mark from 2023.
The Mustangs once again found themselves in an early 1-0 hole in game two. But clutch plays down the stretch put them over the edge and into the Region 10 Tournament.
Mongrain continued her stellar day at the plate with a game-tying single in the third. Sophomore
Georgia Burr — who was also faced with a late-inning bases-loaded situation — singled in two runs in the eighth to propel Monroe to a 3-1 lead.
All roads led to Colon's postseason moment as the Mustangs prevailed on the road.
Monroe will head to the Region 10 Tournament next weekend, with its opponent in the double elimination tournament to be determined.
