New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's soccer team played to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against No. 19 Monroe Community College on Friday.
With the top-seed in the East District Tournament on the line, both teams played a physical bout. Monroe was the aggressor on offense with 11 shots to Monroe CC's two. The Tribunes failed to record a shot over the course of the entire second half.
An early goal from the Tribunes put the Mustangs on the ropes a bit, but freshman
Sebin Jung answered the call with his first score of the season. Fellow freshman
Yejun Ko assisted on the equalizer.
From there, it was a back-and-forth affair, with the Tribunes locking down defensively as Monroe continued to fire off shots. Freshman
Junyoung Park tallied two shots on goal, while sophomore
Carmelo Bello led the way with four shots.
While Monroe CC had its chances as well — as evidenced by its eight corner kick attempts — the backline defense for the Mustangs led by sophomore
Joao Victor De Araujo Ribeiro,
Abel Ador and goalkeeper
Leonardo Martinelli kept the Tribunes off the board for the final 83 minutes of the contest.
With the draw, the two sides now sit tied atop the East District standings, with Monroe CC's Wednesday matchup against Harcum College potentially deciding the seeding order.
For now, the Mustangs will look ahead to their regular season finale against Frederick Community College on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Maryland.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
