NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., August 31, 2024 – The No. 13-ranked Monroe University Mustangs women's soccer team took over the NJCAA Division I lead in scoring with an offensive explosion on Saturday, shutting out Mohawk Valley Community College, 14-0, at Skidelsky Field. The Mustangs improve to 3-1 on the season with the win, while the Hawks fall to 0-1-1.
The Mustangs become the top-scoring team in the NJCAA through its fourth game with Saturday's 14-goal performance, with their 32 goals on the season overtaking Eastern Arizona College's 29. Monroe has scored eight or more goals in 3-of-4 contests in 2024 and has now outscored opponents at home, 22-0.
The Mustangs dropped 10 goals on the Hawks in the first half of Saturday's matchup.
Katherine Neves netted a natural hat trick by scoring Monroe's fifth, sixth and seven goals.
Katherine Bean-Rosario opened the scoring with a goal in the second minute, and later potted Monroe's third goal of the day.
Leni Fohrer got on the board twice for her first two goals of the season in the opening 45 minutes.
Sofia Moreno and
Joewanna De Carvalho each netted their first of the season to help Monroe reach a 10-0 lead at the half.
Maiko Kikuchi scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half to push the lead to 12-0.
Julia Meyer then wrapped up the scoring on the day with back-to-back goals of her own later in the half to make it a 14-0 difference.
Beatrice Vitaletti made her third start of the season and improved to 2-1 with the win, though the 10 players in front of her made her life easy, as she did not face a shot in the game.
Karolina Placek took over for the final 35:48 of the game, making one stop. Arissa Bolton got the start for Mohawk Valley, but only made it through 10 minutes in Saturday's matchup after yielding three goals. Hailey Looman took over for the rest of the match, yielding 11 goals with 10 saves.
Neves totaled eight points in the win with three goals and two assists. Her 21 points on the season now rank third in the NJCAA, while her nine assists top the field. Neves is now in a three-way tie with Bean-Rosario and Kikuchi after each scored two goals of their own to reach a total of six on the season. Bean-Rosario added three assists for a seven-point afternoon, while an assist for Kikuchi gave her five points on the day.
The Mustangs significantly outshot the Hawks, 38-1, in Saturday's matchup, including a 27-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Mustangs had eight of the game's nine corner kicks.
The Mustangs head down to Florida this week for a pair of weekday matchups in Miami. Monroe is set to take on Miami Dade College on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m., before taking on Polk State College on Thursday, Sept. 5, also at Miami Dade, in another 11 a.m. game.
