ROCHESTER, N.Y., August 30, 2024 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe University Mustangs men's soccer team shouldered another tough defeat in a neutral-site matchup against Laramie County Community College, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Golden Eagles at the home team of Monroe Community College. The Mustangs fall to 0-2 on the year with the loss, while the Golden Eagles improve to 2-1.
Neither team was able to score in the opening 45 minutes of Friday's neutral-site contest, though the Mustangs had an 11-7 edge in shot attempts. Things changed early in the second half when the Mustangs committed a foul in their box, giving the Golden Eagles a penalty-kick opportunity in the 58th minute. Goalkeeper
Alvaro Ramos got his hands on the shot by Cooper Johnson with a dive to his left, but the ball managed to stay just inside the pipe, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 edge with just over 30 minutes to play.
In the 71st minute, the Golden Eagles struck again to double their lead. Roy Mendoza Huerta managed to keep the ball in the box while navigating through numerous defenders before finding himself one-on-one with the keeper, getting the ball to roll over the line off a tipped shot to give Laramie County a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs managed to cut the deficit in half, but not until late in the contest.
Sebastian Sayers scored in the 87th minute off an assist from Joao Victor De Araujo Ribeiro to make it a 2-1 match in the final minutes, but it ultimately proved to be too late, as the Mustangs were unable to even the score down the stretch.
Ramos took his second loss of the season in net on Friday, allowing two goals while making three saves in the game. Laramie County starter Luke Hyatt picked up the win with just one goal allowed with six shots stopped.
Monroe's next contest will be an exhibition at home against Lancaster Elite on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Skidelsky Field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. The Mustangs will then play their first regular-season home game on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they host NJCAA Div. II No. 4 CCBC Essex for a 3 p.m. matchup.
