KEYSER, W.V., April 20, 2024 – After the Monroe College Mustangs softball team swept Friday's doubleheader, WVU Potomac State College evened the four-game series by winning both ends of Saturday's doubleheader in West Virginia with a pair of 3-2 victories. The Mustangs fall to 18-25 with the losses, while the Catamounts improve to 23-10.
In Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, sophomore
Marissa Thalassinos reached the 100-hit milestone for her career at Monroe. She becomes the third Mustang in program history to reach 100 career hits, joining Chantel Winstead '19 and former teammate
Mya Jack '23. Thalassinos now sits just seven hits shy of Jack's career record of 107.Â

GAME 1: Potomac State 3, Monroe 2
Unlike yesterday's doubleheader sweep for the Mustangs, the Catamounts got the early jump in Game 1. In the bottom of the first, Potomac State had a runner on third when a grounder to third by Alexa Shoemaker brought her home to give the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Shoemaker came through again for the Catamounts in the third. With runners on second and third, Shoemaker singled through the right side, bringing both runners home to make it a 3-0 lead for the home team.
Â
After being no-hit for four innings, the Mustangs broke through in the top of the fifth.
Maricela Colon broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double, and then advanced to third on a ground out by
Nathalie Mongrain.
Aisling Wilson then singled her in to get the Mustangs on the board. After a wild pitch moved her to third, Wilson scored on a passed ball to get the Mustangs back within a run. Unfortunately, that proved to be the final run of the game, seeing the Catamounts pick up a 3-2 win in Game 1.
Â
Chloe Greise went all seven innings for Potomac State, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits to earn her 13th win.
Gabriella Diaz had a strong outing, allowing just three runs on five hits with four strikeouts across six frames, but unfortunately shouldered the loss to fall to 8-9.
Â
Wilson hit 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Game 1. Colon went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Mongrain finished 1-for-3 with a double.
Â
GAME 2: Potomac State 3, Monroe 2
The Mustangs got off to a better start in Game 2. Diaz hit a one-out double to get things going, and then
Marissa Thalassinos brought her in with a two-out RBI single to give Monroe a quick 1-0 lead.
Â
Georgia Burr led off the second with a single. Mongrain then hit a line drive to right, but the right fielder was able to force Burr out at second for the first out. A ground out by
Nadyelly Bones moved Mongrain up to second. Colon then doubled her in, giving Monroe a 2-0 advantage over the Catamounts.
Â
Things were going smoothly for the Mustangs until the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back walks put two on for the Catamounts with nobody out. Jamie Kelly then came through in a big way for Potomac State, hitting a three-run homer over the fence in right-center to put the Catamounts ahead, 3-2, with just their third hit of the game. The Mustangs were unable to make up the difference in the seventh, falling once again by a 3-2 score.
Â
Charity Wolfe got the complete-game victory for the Catamounts in Game 2 to earn her ninth win of the season.
Sarah Wall made just one mistake on Saturday, but it ultimately resulted in her taking the loss despite another strong effort. She threw six innings, allowing three runs on just three hits while striking out seven batters on the day.
Â
Diaz had a great game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Game 2. Colon batted 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Thalassinos also hit 1-for-3 with an RBI. Burr went 1-for-3 as well, while
Angie Ordonez turned in a 1-for-4 outing.
Â
The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Sunday, April 21, when they wrap up their road trip with a doubleheader at Delaware Technical Community College in Frankford, Del. Tomorrow's first game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
