Rochester, NY – The Monroe University women's soccer team fell to No. 12 Monroe Community College in penalty kicks, 2-2 (4-3 PKs), on Tuesday evening in the East District semi-finals.
The Mustangs began the shootout up 2-1 through two rounds, but back-to-back misses allowed the Tribunes to get back into the race and eventually surpass the upset-minded Mustangs for the 4-3 win.
It was a back-and-forth affair, but Monroe maintained an edge as evidenced by its margin in shots on goal (12-7) and corner kicks (7-2). However, Monroe Community College's ten saves in net were crucial to the victory for the nationally ranked program.
Still, the Mustangs battled through the final whistle. After falling behind 1-0 seconds into the second half, freshman
Katherine Bean-Rosario netted the equalizer a mere minute later. Then, sophomore
Katherine Neves scored the second goal in the 55th minute.
While that lead wouldn't hold, the Mustangs continued to fight in the overtime periods, outshooting the Tribunes, 4-2. Neither team could capitalize, leading to the penalty shootout that ultimately went the way of Monroe Community College.
Neves, who played the entire 110 minutes, led the way with six shots, including four on goal. Freshman
Carmen Santamaria recorded an assist in the loss.
