ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 1, 2023 – The No. 12-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team saw its East District Title hopes come to an end on Wednesday, as the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 5 Monroe Community College in the East District Championship semifinal at John L. DiMarco Field. The Tribunes will now advance to, and host, the East District Championship game against Harford Community College, while the Mustangs are eliminated from the postseason tournament.
The Mustangs had a strong opening half, but were unable to get on the board. The Tribunes saw an opening later in the half and took advantage. After drawing the keeper to the right corner of the net, Niyah Jayde Rosado set up Caitlin Nelson right in front of an open goal, where she tapped it in to give the home team a 1-0 advantage that the Tribunes took into the halftime break.
The Mustangs came out hot in the second half and tied the game up in the 49th minute.
Hinako Aoki sent a long cross up the field to
Katherine Neves, who played it into the box before passing it off her back foot to
Sabrina Bastos da Silva, who rolled it just past the keeper and just inside the right post to knot things up at 1-1 early in the second frame.
The Tribunes were given a penalty-kick opportunity in the 56th minute, looking to take the lead back. Lea Kemp took the shot, beating the netminder to the right side of the net, putting the Tribunes back on top, 2-1. Just a few minutes later, Nelson managed to set up Kayla Baca right in front of the net for another Tribune goal, pushing the lead to 3-1 at 59'. With just over five minutes to play, Rosado got on the board herself to reach the eventual final score of 4-1.
Natalie Dobler made four saves in net for the Mustangs, but unfortunately yielded four goals to take the loss. Tribune keeper Clare Boesel also made four stops but gave up just one goal in the winning effort.
Despite the score, both teams were even with 12 shot attempts apiece. The Tribunes held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, while also having 10 of the game's 15 corner kicks.
