NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 20, 2023 – The No. 4-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team earned a crucial regular-season concluding victory at home on Friday, defeating No. 18 Monroe Community College via 1-0 shutout at Joseph F. Fosina Field. The win gives Monroe the top seed in the region and a first-round bye in the East District Championship tournament. The Mustangs improve to 9-2-1 with the win, while the Tribunes take their first loss to fall to 8-1-2.
In the 14th minute of the first half,
Gun Ha Lee was working his way into the box before being taken down from behind, drawing a foul inside the box to earn a penalty-kick opportunity. Lee made the most of his chance, beating the keeper to the lower-right corner of the net to get the Mustangs on the board for a 1-0 lead. Despite a 6-0 advantage in shots, the Mustangs took that same 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Outside of the Mustangs' successful penalty kick in the first half, much of the game looked the same, with the Mustangs getting the majority of scoring chances. Goalkeeper
Alvaro Ramos was tested a couple times in the second half, making a save in the 82nd minute and a crucial one off a header in the 89th minute, keeping the Tribunes off the board entirely to hang on for the 1-0 victory.
Ramos earned the shutout victory with two saves to improve to 4-1-1 on the season on Friday. Tribune netminder Damian Bohler stopped five shots, but allowed the score on the penalty kick to shoulder the loss.
The Mustangs outshot the Tribunes, 14-2, in the win, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Five of the game's corner kicks also went to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs have earned a first-round bye in the district championship tournament by defeating Monroe Community College on Friday and Harcum College back on Sept. 19. The Mustangs will now host the winner of Harcum and Monroe Community College on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in New Rochelle, in an East District Championship semifinal matchup. That game's start time is to be determined.
