DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., September 22, 2022 – Playing on the road against a nationally ranked opponent for the third straight game, the No. 6-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team had its second draw in that three-game span, this time a 1-1 tie at No. 17 Daytona State College on Thursday. The Mustangs move to 4-2-2 overall, while the Falcons go to 5-0-2.
After a scoreless first half, the Falcons broke the tie in the 70th minute when Shania Harris netted one to give the home team a 1-0 edge over the Mustangs. The Mustangs later took advantage of an opportunity given to them in the 85th minute when a foul drawn in the box gave Monroe a penalty kick chance.
Angel Fowler was successful on the shot, tying the game at 1-1 with just five minutes to play in the second half, eventually forcing overtime.
After two overtime periods and another 20 minutes, neither team was able to break through and score the winner, resulting in the 1-1 stalemate. The Mustangs kept the ball in the offensive third for much of the extra 20 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.
Stephanie Hodgson had a strong game in net, stopping five shots and allowing just the one goal in 110 minutes. Daytona State goalkeeper Lucia Guemes make six saves and yielded one score.
The Mustangs held a 16-10 advantage in shots in the game, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also had three corner kicks to just one for the Falcons.
The Mustangs are finally set to play their home opener in their next contest. They will play host to Brookdale Community College on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
