NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 14, 2022 – The first regular-season home contest at Skidelsky Field for the No. 6-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team turned out to be a prosperous one, as the Mustangs exploded for a dozen goals in a 12-0 victory over Essex County College on Wednesday. The Mustangs improve to 6-0 on the year with the win, while the Wolverines fall to 0-3.
The Mustangs jumped into the lead early in Wednesday's contest in New Rochelle. After picking up a blocked cross inside the box,
Tony Yeboah passed it over to
Diego Batista, who sent it through a defender and the keeper and into the net to give Monroe a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. The Mustangs doubled the lead in the 14th minute when Batista sent a cross in to
Diogo Bastos who redirected it into the open net for a 2-0 edge early in the contest.
Late in the half, Yeboah got on the board himself off an assist from
Gabriel Silveira after some tic-tac-toe in the box, making it a 3-0 match at the 42-minute mark. The Mustangs moved quickly to put two more goals on the board in the 45th minute.
Igor Souza scored off a cross from Batista at 44:11, and then Silveira set up Yeboah for his second of the day with 18 seconds left to put Monroe up, 5-0, heading to the half.
Bruno Rosa got in on the scoring early in the second half. In the 56th minute, he crossed one from the goal line off a defender and over the line, making it a six-goal lead for Monroe. The lead grew to seven in the 71st minute after
Paul Ludwig set up Rosa for his second of the day. Ludwig then netted one of his own off an assist from
Nils Friebe in the 74th minute to make it an 8-0 match.
Adam Yousfi joined the party with an 81st minute goal off a cross from
Cade Erickson to make it a 9-0 contest. Yousfi scored again just 51 seconds later off a feed from Rosa to push the lead to 10 goals. Ludwig lit up the scoreboard for the second time 42 seconds later after tipping in a shot by Rosa, making it an 11-0 score in the 82nd minute. Ludwig completed his hat trick in the 88th minute after firing from the top of the box after a setup by Friebe to make it a 12-0 advantage for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs did not allow a single shot attempt for Essex County in the game, but
Maurice Koenig and
Justin Griffith combined for a shutout between the pipes for the Mustangs in the win. Koenig earns the decision, improving to 6-0 on the season. Nashton Browne suffered the loss for the Wolverines, but made nine saves.
Ludwig finished with a hat trick and seven total points after adding an assist in the win. Rosa had six points on two goals and two assists. Yeboah picked up five points on two goals and a helper. Batista had four points on a goal and two assists, while Yousfi matched his four points with a pair of scores.
Monroe held a 34-0 edge in total shot attempts on Wednesday, including a 21-0 advantage in shots on goal. Monroe also had 16 corner kicks compared to just two for the Wolverines.
The Mustangs' next contest will take place down in Florida on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they take on No. 20 Eastern Florida State College at Daytona State College. That game is set to begin at 7 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
