WINTER HAVEN, Fla., March 6, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs softball team wrapped up its Florida trip to The Spring Games on Sunday with a 8-0 defeat against Jackson College at Diamondplex. Monroe's second scheduled game of the day against West Virginia Wesleyan College JV was canceled due to a scheduling error.
Â
The Jets got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first on Sunday. Addison Hudson led off with a bunt single, and then Kylee Yon added another single to put runners on the corners. After Yon stole second, Carolina Kern singled in both runners to put the Jets ahead, 2-0.
Â
Jackson added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Kern grounded out to third, but it was enough to score Brooklyn Barton and make it a 3-0 game.
Â
Jackson's lead grew once again in the home half of the sixth. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Yon doubled to left to bring in Barton and make it a 4-0 lead for the Jets. Kern then singled in Hudson to push the lead to five. With the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Madison Schornack grounded out to first, allowing Yon to score and make it a 6-0 score. Savannah Kirk then doubled into right, plating two more runs for the Jets to bring the lead to 8-0 and force the game to end via the run-rule.
Â
Breanna Huffman went the full six innings for Jackson to pick up the win and improve to 2-1.
Hilda Sanchez shouldered the loss for Monroe after yielding two runs across three frames.
Genelly Cruz hit 1-for-2 in the game for the Mustangs, while
Angelina Perez hit 1-for-3.
Â
With The Spring Games now in the rearview, the Mustangs will return home for 10 straight games in New Rochelle over the rest of March. They begin the homestand on Saturday, March 12, when they host Mercer County Community College at the Flowers Park Softball Field. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m.
