NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 5, 2022 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team suffered its only loss of the 2022 season on Saturday in an upset defeat at the hands of Montgomery College in the East District Championship final at Skidelsky Field by a score of 3-1. Montgomery earns the East District's automatic bid into the 2022 NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Championship, while the Mustangs will have to rely on an at-large bid to get into the national tournament.
Montgomery took the lead late in the first half when Ethan Lane scored in the 38th minute, sending the game to halftime with the Raptors ahead, 1-0. Later in the second half, Andres Javitt, was able to head the ball away from Monroe's keeper just before he could snag a long cross toward the box, allowing him to recover the ball behind the keeper with a wide open net and put the Raptors ahead, 2-0, with just under 20 minutes to play.
Two minutes later, Javitt got on the board again after cleaning up a shot by Sota Matsuo that caromed off the post, pushing Montgomery's lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute. The Mustangs managed to find the back of the net when Bruno Rosa set up Tony Yeboah for a score in the 86th minute, but it was not enough to get the Mustangs back in the game.
The Mustangs had a significant edge in shots on goal in the game, resulting in Montgomery goalkeeper Thomas Mauro stopping 13 shots to earn the win. Hyeongjun Choi shouldered the loss for the Mustangs between the pipes.
With the East District's automatic bid to the NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Championship now off the table, the Mustangs will hope to hear their name called for an at-large bid during Tuesday's NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Bracket Release show on the NJCAA Network. A time for the bracket release will be announced during the week.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
