NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 22, 2022 – The 2022 NJCAA Div. I East District Championship Tournament will now run through the No. 3-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team, as the Mustangs defeated No. 18 Monroe Community College on Saturday in the Region 3/15 Championship match at Skidelsky Field. The 10-0-2 Mustangs will now host a District Championship semifinal match next Saturday in New Rochelle.
Exactly five minutes into the game,
Bruno Rosa crossed one into the box for
Tony Yeboah who tried to score, but the initial shot was stopped point-blank by the keeper. The rebound went straight up, allowing Yeboah to head it forward into the net, putting the Mustangs up, 1-0.
Later in the half, Rosa sent a cross from before midfield up the seam to Yeboah, who had a step on the defender. He sprinted toward the box and beat the keeper from just inside to double the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute.
Rosa picked up his third assist of the half shortly after. He set things up on the left side of the box before finding
Nils Friebe right in front of the net, who fired top shelf to beat the goalie and put the Mustangs ahead, 3-0, at 40'. The Mustangs went on to hold that lead not only through the half, but for the rest of the match.
Hyeongjun Choi made two saves without allowing a goal to earn the shutout victory and improve to 3-0-1 on the season. David Indra shouldered the loss for the Tribunes with nine saves and three goals allowed.
The Mustangs outshot the Tribunes, 17-2, in the win, while holding a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. Nine of the game's 11 corner kicks also went to the Mustangs.
The Mustangs will now be the top seed in the 2022 East District Championship tournament, and will open the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29, with a home semifinal match at Skidelsky Field. Next Saturday's contest will begin at 4 p.m. Monroe's semifinal opponent will be announced during the week.
