No. 9 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Falls Late to No. 15 Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE, Kan., September 25, 2021 – The No. 9-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team wrapped up a challenging trip to Kansas with a 2-1 defeat to No. 15 Coffeyville Community College Friday evening. The Mustangs fall to 3-3 on the year, while the Ravens remain unbeaten at 8-0.
 
After a scoreless first half, Ivan Silic got the scoring started in the 49th minute by turning an assist by Terry Stephenson into the net to give Monroe a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs held that lead until the 77th minute when the Ravens tied the game up. Coffeyville then took the lead for good with three minutes left on the clock to eventually win, 2-1.
 
Goalkeeper Mathew Nikolovski made nine saves in the game, but shouldered the loss after yielding two goals.
 
The schedule does not get any easier for the Mustangs, who will challenge themselves with a trip to Cocoa, Fla. next weekend. They will open the weekend against No.6 Daytona State College on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. The Mustangs finish the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 3, against host Eastern Florida State College at 12 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
