ROCHESTER, N.Y., August 27, 2021 – Facing the NJCAA's top team to open the new season, the 13th-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team suffered an unfortunate start to the 2021 campaign, falling to No. 1, and defending NJCAA Champion, Salt Lake Community College, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Monroe Community College in Rochester. The Mustangs start the year at 0-1, while the Bruins improve to 2-0 on the early season.
Salt Lake scored all three of its goals in the first half of Friday's contest. The Mustangs fired off eight shots in the contest, putting five of them on goal, but were unfortunately unable to get one past the keeper in the season opener. Monroe starter
Maurice Koing made six saves, but took his first loss in the game.
Cameron O'Dorethy,
Liam Murray and
Isaac Garro Coto each attempted two shots in the game.
Tony Yeboah and
Samuel Atiye each attempted one shot in the loss.
The Mustangs will take on a more familiar foe on Sunday, Aug. 29, when they challenge their hosts for the weekend, No. 20 Monroe Community College. Sunday's game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 39 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 18 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
