NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 1, 2019 – In what is coined the "Monroe Derby," the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team shut out No. 6 Monroe Community College on Sunday by a score of 6-0 at Joseph F. Fosina Field. The Mustangs improve to 3-0 on the season with the win, while the Tribunes suffer their first loss to fall to 2-1.
After shaking off the rust in her first two games back from injury,
Laia Munoz Danon opened the scoring in Sunday's matchup with her first goal of the year in the sixth minute to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 edge on the Tribunes.
Munoz Danon later set up
Sydoney Clarke for her 10th goal of the early season in the 26th minute. She sprinted up the middle of the field toward the right of the box, sent a perfect cross to the top of the box where Clarke immediately fired into the top of the net to put the Mustangs ahead, 2-0.
The Mustangs were not done there in the first half. With under four minutes to play before halftime,
Isabelle Andrea Tola lined up for a free kick from the 33-yard line and sent the kick into the box, where it deflected off a defender and trickled into the goal, putting the Mustangs up, 3-0, heading into the break.
Luana Grabias got on the board twice midway through the second half. She scored an unassisted goal at the 67:20 mark to make it a 4-0 game. Grabias was then set up by Tola for another score just 40 seconds later to push the lead to five with just over 20 minutes to play. Grabias completed a natural hat trick at the 70:25 mark with her third score in just over three minutes, pushing Monroe's advantage to six.
Stefane Rosa made seven stops in net to earn the shutout victory on Sunday and improve to 3-0 on the year. Tribune goalkeeper Lydia Kunz allowed six goals and made eight saves to take her first loss.
Grabias' three goals were a team high in Sunday's victory. Munoz Danon picked up a goal and an assist, while Tola matched her three-point day. Clarke netted her team-high 10th goal of the year in the win as well.
The Mustangs will look to keep rolling when they hit the road on Saturday, Sept. 7. They will visit Essex County College in Newark, N.J., with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
