Monroe Mustangs JV Baseball Falls to SUNY Sullivan JV

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 26, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team dropped a 20-10 decision to SUNY Sullivan JV on Tuesday. The Mustangs fall to 2-8 overall, while the Generals start their season 1-0.

Jonas Marte led off the bottom of the first for the Mustangs with a bunt single down the first—base line. Javier Ortiz then drew a walk, and then Jaylen Kelley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch then allowed Marte to score from third and make it a 1-0 Mustang lead. After Jose Mercado walked, another wild pitch scored Ortiz to double the lead. Jason DeJesus then hit a sacrifice fly to center, plating Kelley to put the Mustangs up by three.

Nick Simonenko hit a one-out single to short to get things going in the second. After advancing on a wild pitch, a single into center by Marte moved Simonenko to third. A wild pitch then brought him in to score and made it a 4-0 game. Ortiz then walked to put runners on the corners for Monroe, and a fielder's choice to second by Kelley scored Marte to push the Mustang lead to 5-0.

The Generals made their way back into the game in the top of the third. With a runner on third, Pedro Abreu doubled to left to bring in the Generals' first run of the day. With two on later in the inning, Devin Edwards hit a two-out double to make it a 5-3 game.

The Mustangs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Kelley hit an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Simonenko to go up by two.

The Generals put together a three-run rally in the top of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead on the Mustangs.

Monroe regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners on, Kelley blasted a three-run homer over the left-center field fence, putting the Mustangs back up, 9-7.

The Generals then had a huge seventh inning, plating 13 runs to take a 20-9 advantage. The Mustangs got one back in the home half of the frame, but it was not enough to keep the game from ending via run rule.

Joshua Evans earned the win for the Generals, while the Jorge Gonzalez shouldered the loss for Monroe to fall to 0-1.

Kelley finished 1-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs with a three-run homer in the game. Marte batted 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Simonenko went 3-for-4 with three runs and a double.

The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Thursday, March 28, when they host the Monroe Express JV team for an intra-campus battle at Dick Caswell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
