WEST HARRISON, N.Y., March 12, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV baseball team opened its 2019 campaign on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Westchester Community College at Silver Lake Park. The Vikings swept the Mustangs with wins of 4-2 and 9-1 in what was also their season opener. The Mustangs fall to 0-2 to start the year, while the Vikings improve to 2-0.

GAME 1: WESTCHESTER 4, MONROE JV 2
The Vikings took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Steve Guzman beat out an infield single to bring in a run for a quick 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, the Vikings took advantage of having runners on the corners, bringing in a run when Tyler Parshley grounded out to third to double their lead.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings once again added to their lead. Aaron Roman was standing on third when Sean Vanegas hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Roman to take a 3-0 edge.

The Mustangs broke through in the top of the fifth.
Jonas Marte reached on an error with one out.
Stanley David then blasted a two-run homer, getting the Mustangs back within a run.

The Vikings padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth after Vanegas and CJ Spence hit back-to-back doubles, leaving the Vikings up, 4-2, a score they held onto through the final out.

Michael Cox picked up the complete-game victory for the Vikings, allowing two runs (one earned) in seven frames.
Adrian Perez tossed four innings for the Mustangs, allowing three runs to shoulder the loss and fall to 0-1.

David finished 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in Game 1.
Nick Simonenko batted 1-for-2 in his debut for the Mustangs.

GAME 2: WESTCHESTER 9, MONROE 1
The Mustangs took the first lead in Tuesday's finale, but their run in the top of the third unfortunately proved to be their only score of the game.
Kevin Hernandez blasted a solo home run to give Monroe a 1-0 edge. The Vikings then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth before rallying for eight runs in the sixth, eventually hanging on to that lead for a 9-1 win.

Hernandez finished 1-for-2 with his first homer and a walk in Tuesday's second contest.
Jason DeJesus went 1-for-2 as well, stroking his first double.
Eric Diaz batted 1-for-3 in the game.

The Mustangs and Vikings will go head-to-head once again on Thursday, March 14, when they play another doubleheader at Silver Lake Park. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 29 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
