REGION CHAMPS! No. 1 Monroe Mustangs Men’s Soccer Captures Fourth Straight Region XV Title with Shutout of ASA

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., October 25, 2019 – For the fourth straight season, the No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team has claimed the NJCAA Region XV Division I Men's Soccer Championship, as the Mustangs defeated ASA College, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park. The Mustangs will take an unblemished 12-0 record into the East District Championship, while ASA finishes its season at 2-8-1.

The Mustangs did not take long to jump into the lead. Luca Erhardt set up Markus Maurer right in front of the keeper, where he redirected Erhardt's cross right into the back of the next at the 6:59 mark to make it a 1-0 game. Erhardt then got a penalty-kick opportunity in the 13th minute, which was stopped by the keeper, but Erhardt headed the rebound out of mid-air just over the line to make it a 2-0 lead for Monroe. That was it for the first half, as the Mustangs took a two-goal advantage into the break.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Tobias Pellio scored off an assist from Leon Sitz, pushing Monroe's lead to 3-0 at the 55:33 mark. Just six minutes later, Roque Viegas led Luca Erhardt into the box, where he fired one to the left of the goalie and into the net to make it a 4-0 Mustang advantage.

In the 66th minute, the Mustangs got on the board once again when Daniel Haegler provided the assist to Henry Davies for Monroe's fifth goal of the game. After a 21-minute gap, the Mustangs got on the board once again when Shawn Manley West assisted Othman Gherab at the 86:19 mark to push Monroe's lead to 6-0. Gherab scored again at the 87:57 mark to make it a 7-0 game.

Monroe goalies Victor Camps and Oliver Semmle split the game, playing the first and second half, respectively. With the Mustangs playing shutdown defense, the keepers did not need to make a single stop, but Camps was awarded the win to improve to 6-0 on the season. Zachary Daviault allowed seven goals and made 14 saves to suffer the loss for ASA.

The Mustangs outshot the Avengers, 34-4, on the day, including a 24-0 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Region XV Championship victory qualifies the Mustangs for the 2019 East District Championship, which will be held from Nov. 9-10 at the Region XIX Champion. The East District Championship schedule will be announced at a later date.
