HARRISBURG, Pa., October 15, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's volleyball team kicked off a long week of road matches at Harrisburg Area Community College on Tuesday, defeating the Hawks in three sets to run its winning streak to 12 matches. Monroe improves to 16-8 overall with the win, while the Hawks drop their first match and fall to 19-1.
The Mustangs fell behind, 6-2, early in the first set, but an eight-point run shortly after put them on top, 11-7. After trading points back-and-forth and back-and-forth to reach a 17-13 score, the Mustangs took 5-of-6 and 8-of-10 to cap off the opening set with a 25-15 win.
After a close start in the second stanza, the Mustangs picked up 7-of-8 points to go up, 12-5. After two points by the Hawks, Monroe rattled off six straight to reach an 18-7 advantage. The Hawks took the next three points, but that was it for the home team, as Monroe scored the final seven points of the game for a 25-10 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Mustangs left no doubt in the third frame, going on an incredible 15-point run to open the set. The Mustangs kept their foot on the pedal from that point forward, wrapping things up with a 25-9 win.
Giulia La Longa hit .529 en route to a team-high 11 kills in the win on Tuesday, adding two blocks as well.
Alondra Ramos threw down eight kills and hit .538.
Zassmine Birdwell had a team-high three blocks and added four kills.
Alondra Garcia handed out 14 assists while
Yarianne Gonzalez registered 10. Garcia also led the Mustangs with four aces.
Melanie Orsini picked up a team-high 18 digs.
The Mustangs return to Pennsylvania on Wednesday, Oct. 16, when they visit Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pa. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
