NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 30, 2019 – The Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team returned home on Wednesday, picking up an American Independent Post Grad and Collegiate Conference (AIPGCC) victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent JV team by a score of 82-67 at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 14-6 overall with the win, and 6-2 in AIPGCC play.
The Dolphins came out firing to start the game, taking a 16-6 advantage over the Mustangs by the 12:36 mark of the first half. Monroe then went on a 13-2 run to claim a 19-18 advantage with 7:55 left before the half. The Dolphins responded with seven straight points, and later managed to take a 29-23 lead.
The Mustangs then came back with seven straight points of their own to go back up by one.
Rakim Bryant provided 11 straight points for the Mustangs to push their lead to 36-31 with 1:28 to play in the half. Monroe closed out the half with its final four points to take a 40-34 edge into the break.
Bryant led all scorers with 16 points through the first 20 minutes, including four three-pointers.
Javaughn Daniel added four points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Alfredo Robles contributed eight points and five boards in the first half.
The Mustangs steadily improved upon their lead early in the second half, using a 10-0 run to take a 59-44 advantage with 13:49 left in regulation. A three by Robles at the 6:36 mark made it a 20-point lead for the Mustangs, and they never looked back, hanging on for a 15-point win at home.
Robles finished up with a team-high 18 points, adding nine boards and three steals in the win. Daniel added eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Joans Gjeci finished with 14 points and seven boards.
The Mustangs will play next on Friday, Feb. 1, when they visit The Robinson School in Newark, N.J. for another AIPGCC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
