Offensive Onslaught Lifts Monroe Baseball over County College of Morris

RANDOLPH, N.J., April 10, 2018 – The Monroe College baseball team slugged a season-best 11 extra-base hits on Tuesday, lifting the Mustangs to a 15-6 victory on the road at County College of Morris. Monroe improves to 18-7 on the year with the win, while Morris falls to 8-15.

The Mustangs got things started quickly in Tuesday's road contest. Marquis Orozco lined a single into left to lead off the game, and then Edwin Feliciano Jr. drew a walk. Iasid Bernal then singled to load the bases, and Shadrach Meulens came through with a two-RBI double to give Monroe an early 2-0 lead.

David Veras hit a one-out solo homer for the Titans in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half. An error and a walk then put two runners on for Morris, and Dany Perez took advantage with an RBI single to center, tying the game at 2-2.

Morris loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third. Jake Hall then brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Titans a 3-2 lead. Jonathan Biale then singled through the right side, bringing in another run to leave Morris up, 4-2.

Joseph Encarnacion hit a one-out double into left to get things going for Monroe in the fourth. Orozco followed with a double of his own to right, scoring Encarnacion to get the Mustangs back within a run. Orozco moved to third on a groundout by Feliciano, and then scored on the Mustangs' third double of the inning, this time off the bat of Bernal, to tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the fifth, Troy Davern sent a one-out double over the center fielder. Like the inning prior, Abner Vincenty made it back-to-back doubles, bringing in Davern to put the Mustangs in the lead, 5-4. Joel Paulino then ripped a single to center, scoring Vincenty to make it a 6-4 Mustang lead. Monroe loaded the bases when Encarnacion singled and Orozco was hit by a pitch, setting up Feliciano for a grand slam blasted over the right-field fence, pushing Monroe's lead to 10-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Veras hit a leadoff double, and then Hall singled to right to put runners on the corners. Biale hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Veras to make it a five-run game. Angel Soler then singled to left, bringing in Hall to cut the deficit to four.

The scoring was halted until the Mustangs once again broke through in the top of the eighth. Davern and Leandy Castro each drew a walk with one away. Kevin Garcia then came on to pinch hit, which proved to be a spectacular move, as Garcia blasted a three-run homer over the wall in left, pushing the Mustangs' lead to 13-6.

The Mustangs added to their lead in the top of the ninth. Feliciano continued a strong game with a leadoff double to right. He later came in to score when Lenyn Napoleon doubled to left, making it a 14-6 lead for Monroe. Napoleon later moved to third on a passed ball, then came in to score on a wild pitch, making it a 15-6 ballgame.

Nicholas Gennarelli picked up his first win of the season in relief on Tuesday. He allowed two runs on four hits across three frames, and became the pitcher of record after taking over for starter Andrew Pena in the top of the fifth inning. Morris starter Charles Betz shouldered the loss after giving up 10 runs in five frames.

Feliciano led the way for Monroe, going 3-for-4 with a grand slam, four RBIs and three runs scored. Orozco batted 2-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, a double and a stolen base. Davern finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Encarnacion went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. The Mustangs' lineup combined for nine doubles on the afternoon, as well as a pair of home runs.

The Mustangs will play next on Thursday, April 12, when they host ASA College in another Region XV doubleheader at Dick Caswell Field. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 4 p.m.
