NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 31, 2018 – The Monroe College baseball team split a doubleheader against Rockland Community College on Saturday at Dick Caswell Field.
Francisco Justo tossed a gem in Game 1 to lead Monroe to a 2-0 victory, but the Mustangs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Hawks in Game 2. Monroe leaves the day with a 13-6 overall record after seeing its six-game winning streak halted.
Game 1: Monroe 2, Rockland 0
The Mustangs caught a break in the bottom of the second and made sure to take advantage of it.
Shadrach Meulens struck out to lead off the frame, but a passed ball allowed him to reach first, and an errant throw by the catcher put him on second base without an out. A single by
Edgardo Bernard then put runners on the corners.
Juan Torres then hit a grounder to second that got Bernard out at second, but he beat out the double play and Meulens was able to score, making it a 1-0 Mustang lead. Later in the frame, with Torres standing on third,
Joel Paulino ripped a single into left, scoring Torres to leave Monroe up, 2-0. This proved to be all the Mustangs would need to pick up the win.
Mustang starter
Francisco Justo was brilliant in Saturday's opener, tossing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters, seven of which went down looking. He improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
Jason Alvarez came on in the seventh, keeping the Hawks off the board to earn his fourth save of the season. Rockland starter John Greeley shouldered the loss to fall to 0-2.
Paulino hit 1-for-2 with an RBI in Game 1. Torres had the other RBI and a run scored despite an 0-for-3 outing.
Lenyn Napoleon batted 1-for-2 with a double.
Game 2: Rockland 5, Monroe 2
After being unable to score a run in Saturday's opener, the Hawks quickly changed the narrative in the top of the first in Game 2. John Greeley hit a two-out double down the right-field line, and then Chris Dodrill hit a double deep down the left-field line to bring in Rockland's first run of the day and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Rockland managed to get on the board once again in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Chris Perich hit a grounder to first. Trying to turn a double play, the Mustangs got the runner out at second, but the throw to first was not in time, and got away from the first baseman, allowing two runs to come across and give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs finally got things going in the bottom of the sixth.
Edwin Feliciano Jr. reached on an error with one away, and then Napoleon doubled to right-center to put both runners in scoring position.
Iasid Bernal took advantage with two outs, ripping a double down the left-field line to bring in both runners and cut the deficit to one.
Rockland loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, and a wild pitch brought in another run for the Hawks, giving the visitors a 4-2 edge. Shortly after, another bases-loaded wild pitch brought in Rockland's fifth run.
Richard Moesker shouldered the loss for the Mustangs to fall to 2-1 on the season. He allowed just two earned runs on four hits across five frames. Chris Dodrill picked up the win for Rockland to improve to 1-2, while James Reilly tallied his first save.
Bernal knocked in two runs after going 1-for-3 with a double in Game 2. Napoleon hit 1-for-3 with another double and a run scored.
Leandy Castro batted 2-for-3.
The Mustangs will look to start a new winning streak when they hit the road on Tuesday, April 3, to visit Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J. First pitch of the nine-inning game is set for 3:30 p.m.
