WEST WINDSOR, N.J., October 6, 2018 – A career-high nine-point day for
Juliana Pires lifted the No. 4-ranked Monroe College Mustangs women's soccer team to a 10-0 victory on the road at Mercer County Community College Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs improve to 8-0-1 on the year with the win, while the Vikings drop to 3-8.
Pires tallied four goals and dished out an assist for her best statistical day in a Mustang uniform on Saturday. She was joined by
Maria Santin and
Alba Gonzalez with multi-goal days, as both scored twice in the win.
Anya Donelan and
Yolanda Albalat also had multiple points, dishing out two assists apiece, while
Francesca Sullivan and
Angie Ponce each registered a goal and an assist.
Santin got the scoring started at the 4:11 mark, redirecting a pass from Donelan to quickly take a 1-0 lead. Pires scored at the seven-minute mark on a penalty kick to make it 2-0. Ponce followed that up 52 seconds later off an assist from Pires, giving Monroe a 3-0 advantage early on.
Pires notched her second of the day in the 15th minute off of Donelan's second assist to make it a 4-0 game. Gonzalez then scored at 19:15, her third of the season, to put Monroe up by five. Sullivan scored off a pass from Ponce just 36 seconds later, leaving the Mustangs up, 6-0, before the 20-minute mark.
Pires completed the hat trick at the 23:57 point of the first half off an assist from Albalat to make it a 7-0 game. Gonzalez followed with her second of the day in the 29-minute mark to push the lead to eight. Santin picked up her second goal five minutes later, turning a pass from Sullivan into the net for a 9-0 Mustang lead. Pires capped things off with her fourth score of the afternoon at the 40-minute mark off another assist from Albalat, giving Monroe the 10-0 lead that they held the rest of the way.
Goalkeeper
Marta Alemany improved to 8-0-1 on the season after making one save through a scoreless 64:54 in net for the Mustangs. Nadine Abouelela took the loss for the Vikings after yielding 10 scores with seven saves.
Monroe held a significant 34-4 advantage in shots on the day, including a 20-3 edges in shots on goal. They also won the corner-kick battle, 10-1.
The Mustangs will play the final road game on their schedule on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they visit Sussex County Community College in Newton, N.J. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
