Gherab’s Double OT Winner Lifts No. 13 Monroe Men’s Soccer over Monroe CC

ROCHESTER, N.Y., October 20, 2018Othman Gherab provided the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the No. 13-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Monroe Community College on Saturday. The Mustangs improve to 8-1-1 on the season with the win, while the Tribunes drop to 8-4-1.
 
After a scoreless first half, Monroe's Luca Erhardt broke the tie in the 57th minute. Off a turnover, Erhardt took advantage of the giveaway and found the back of the net, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 edge on the Tribunes.
 
The Tribunes managed to tie things up late in the game. Anthony Shorts scored at the 82:22 mark off an assist from Jacques Aristhenes, tying the game in the final minutes at 1-1, sending the game into overtime.
 
The game needed double overtime to determine a winner on Saturday. At the 103:39 mark, Erhardt found Gherab, who managed to turn and fire into the back of the net, winning the game for the Mustangs in the second extra period with a 2-1 final score.
 
Isac Hildingsson made three saves to earn the victory and improve to 2-0 on the season. Monroe CC's Kyle Bimek shouldered the loss after stopping four shots and allowing two goals.
 
The Mustangs outshot the Tribunes, 20-6, on the afternoon, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also won the corner-kick battle, 10-3.
 
The Mustangs are set to take on ASA College this coming weekend to determine the Region XV Champion. The game will be hosted by ASA, with a date and location yet to be announced.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
