Five Different Goal Scorers Lift Mustangs JV Men’s Soccer over Army Prep

WEST POINT, N.Y., October 16, 2018 – On the backs of five different goal scorers, the Monroe Mustangs JV men's soccer team defeated the Army Preparatory Academy by a score of 5-2 Tuesday evening in West Point. The Mustangs improve to 3-2 on the year with the win.
 
Clyford Hypolite kicked off the scoring for Monroe with a goal off a feed from Axel Rodriguez at the 24-minute mark. Army's Xavier Allen then tied things up at 39:00 on a penalty kick. Right as the buzzer sounded for halftime, Guy Delva turned another Rodriguez assist into a goal, leaving Monroe up, 2-1, heading into the break.
 
Gabriel De Jesus picked things up in the second half, scoring in the 56th minute to make it a 3-1 game. Allen scored again for Army shortly after to cut the deficit in half. De Jesus then set up Jose Gonzalez for Monroe's fourth goal of the evening at the 60:51 mark. Michel Sonceau capped things off in the 64th minute, this time off an assist from Gonzalez to make it a 5-2 game.
 
Daminik Zelayandia picked up the win for Monroe, his first of the season, while Jose Ocampo and Tiler Brown also spent time in net for the Mustangs. Martin Ocampo took the loss for Army.
 
The Mustangs dominated possession in the game, firing off 25 shots to just two for Army, including a 15-2 deficit in shots on goal. They also had all eight of the game's corner kicks.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 27 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
