Matos Nets 38 in Monroe Men’s Basketball’s Loss at No. 5 Eastern Florida State

MELBOURNE, Fla., January 3, 2018 – Jhery Matos netted a career-high 38 points on Tuesday, but it was not enough, as the Monroe College men's basketball team fell to tournament host, and No. 5-ranked Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) in its opening matchup at the EFSC New Year Classic at the Titan Field House. The Mustangs fall to 9-6 on the year with the loss, while the Titans improve to 16-1.
 
Matos made 15-of-23 attempts from the field on Tuesday, while also sinking 6-of-11 shots from three-point range to set a new career-high of 38 points. He also narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and picked up four steals as well.
 
Bryan Assie and Christopher Burkley each tallied eight points for the Mustangs on Tuesday. Thomas Binelli picked up seven points and five boards. Clythus Griffith added five points, four rebounds and an assist.
 
The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Jan. 3, when they take on Miami-Dade College as part of the New Year Classic. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level as of the fall of 2017.
