No. 1 Monroe Men’s Soccer Blanks Massasoit for Fourth Straight Shutout

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 16, 2017 – The top-ranked Monroe College men's soccer team registered its fourth straight shutout and improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season after defeated Massasoit Community College, 2-0, Saturday evening in a chippy contest at City Park.

After 28 minutes of physical play, Mateus Candido got the scoring started for the evening. After a deflected pass, he found the ball in the box with the keeper behind him and a wide open net in front of him, and he buried it to put the Mustangs ahead, 1-0. Both teams had a number of opportunities for the rest of the frame, but neither managed to score, sending the game to the half with the Mustangs ahead by one.

In the 69th minute of the game, Felipe Mendes crossed the ball from 40 yards out and found Gabriel Machado, who scored on a beautiful play to make it 2-0. Machado played the cross off his head, and quickly snapped it into the bottom left corner of the net just past the keeper for the score.

Goalkeeper Svyat Kozak picked up his third shutout of the year and improve to 4-0 after making one stop in the win. Massasoit netminder Ollie Degraca made four saves in the loss.

Candido and Machado provided the scoring for the Mustangs on Saturday, while Mendes contributed the assist on the second goal.
