New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Monroe College JV Basketball team used a pair of buzzer shots, one at the end of regulation, the other at the conclusion of overtime, to win their home game Thursday against Prestige Prep, 80-78.
Michael-Roy Miller shot a layup off an inbound pass to tie the score at 78-all at the end of regulation. The winning basket came from
Mahmadou Fofana's layup at the end of overtime.
After a slow start in the first five minutes of action, Monroe pulled ahead, getting the lead into double-digits when
James Brady made a jumper at 13:15 that put the score at 15-5. A free throw by
Mario Hernandez with just over nine minutes left gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the half -- 12 points -- at 23-11. Monroe led at halftime, 32-30.
Prestige Prep took control early in the second half and pushed the lead to seven points, 44-37. From there, Monroe responded with a 9-2 run that tied the score at 46-all.
Nolen Irby, Brady,
Kenwyn Christian and
Andre Morgan all scored. A basket by Miller with 5:57 remaining put Monroe up by eight, 60-52.
Shortly thereafter, Prep tied the game and it went back-and-forth from there. Miller scored the final four points of regulation for Monroe, including the game-tying basket with 0:01 left, sending the contest into overtime.
Monroe opened the extra session with a three-point-play from Irby to make the score 73-70. Prep came back and led 78-75 with 1:38 left.
Irby sank two free throws to pull the Mustangs within one. Later, Christian evened the score at 78-all on a clutch foul shot with 0:58 left. After Monroe forced a Prep turnover, Miller made the game-winning basket as time expired. The Mustangs prevailed, 80-78.
Brady had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Irby scored a game-high 24 points, while Miller finished with 10. The team improved to 11-10 with the win. They return to action on Saturday, February 4, when they face Navy Prep in Newport, Rhode Island.
