No. 3 Monroe Men’s Soccer Nationals Bound Despite District Championship Loss to No. 15 Mercer County

ROCHESTER, N.Y., November 6, 2017 – The No. 3-ranked Monroe College men's soccer team is heading to the 2017 NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament for the second straight season despite dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 15 Mercer County Community College on Sunday in the 2017 NJCAA Northeast District Championship game. The Mustangs will enter the National Tournament with a 12-1-2 record, while the Vikings qualify as the District Champions and with a 19-3-1 overall mark.
 
Oshana Boothe scored the only goal of the game for Mercer County, netting the game-winner in the 78th minute to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead and eventually the win.
 
Mustang goalkeeper David de la Hera made a pair of saves, but allowed one goal to fall to 4-1-1 on the year. Erick Guimaraes Cava got the win for Mercer County with one save.
 
The Mustangs enter the National Tournament after being one of the top two teams in the Northeast District. The tournament will be hosted by Yavapai College in Prescott Valley, Ariz. The tournament will begin with group play from Monday, Nov. 13 through Wednesday, Nov. 15. The winners of each of four groups will then compete on Friday, Nov. 17 in the National Semifinals, with two victors moving on to the National Championship Game on Saturday, Nov. 18.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
