Monroe’s Men’s Soccer Team to Play for National Championship Title Tonight

“Sudden Death” Goal by Antonio Sanchez Gives Monroe Mustangs the 4-3 Win over Ancilla College

Tyler, Texas – After a thrilling double-overtime 4-3 victory over upstart Ancilla College on Friday, the Monroe College Men's Soccer team is just one win away from a national title. They face Tyler Junior College, the championship tournament host and number one-ranked team in the country, for the championship title on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7:00 pm. The game will be live-streamed HERE.

The Ancilla Chargers entered the game after upsetting number three-ranked Iowa Western earlier in the tournament. Monroe jumped out within the first several minutes to an early lead following a goal by Antonio Sanchez. The Chargers responded quickly, evening the score 10 minutes later. Just past the half-hour mark, Jamal Manley West found the back of the net, and the Mustangs headed into the intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

Sanchez connected on his second goal of the night, just a minute into the second half. The Chargers continued to play well, and scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to even the score at 3-3 and push the game into overtime.

Monroe took a shot at goal to win the game in the first overtime session, but the ball failed to find the back of the net. Finally, just past the 100-minute mark, Gabriel Machado connected with Sanchez for his third goal of the contest, giving Monroe the victory, 4-3. The game, Monroe's first overtime contest of the season, improved the team's record to 19-0 for the year.

The Mustangs will play Tyler Junior College at 7:00 pm tonight after the latter won the tournament's other semi-final, putting the two top-ranked teams in the country head-to-head on the pitch for the national title.
